The Winter Palace
When the winter winds begin to blow, the sturdy timbers of the great country manor shelter all. Sit by the fire and listen to the peasant musicians come to sing for their supper, or hear old women tell dark tales of wolves and frozen lakes, of Koschei the Deathless and brave Prince Ivan. The courtiers are bored with the endless snow, but the merry bells on the horses and sleighs lift your spirits. In the day the young men ride out on the hunt, in the night they sigh for a flash of a maiden's eyes. The distinction of class matters less here, as do the finer trappings of high society. Here is a place of furs and rough wool, of meat and red wine. Fall asleep on the hearth rug, and dream of heroes with their bright swords, and hungry wolves at the door.
