Shelter in the Storm
This, my narrow shelter in the storm: a gap, gnawed out of the living stone. My little fire shimmers softly on its forgotten walls. It's frail and vulnerable; shivering, as though it too is afraid of flickering out. It's as though I bring it as much comfort here as it brings me, its seething tongues lap gently at my huddled knees and frozen heart. The lightning writhes upon the heaving black sea of the sky. The rain drowns the world and we sit alone together and watch it wash away; this little fire and I.
