Secret HQ
At the end of the corridor, we squeeze into an elevator, my guard nudging me with the muzzle of her gun. The doors close and open up again, into a bright hall, into sunlight. But that can’t be right. We were underground just a second ago.
My guard only steps out of the elevator after I do, pushing me forward. There are trees inside the hall. Trees. Breaking out of the marble floor and stretching towards the ceiling that seems to be made of glass, and is so bright I can hardly look at it without squinting.
Sun lamps.
But damn powerful ones, if they can support these trees.
Between the large trunks, there’s a marble basin, different planes transporting water from the top to the bottom, and people are sitting on the edges, talking to each other, eating, looking at their phones.
Who paid for all this?
