Night of the Dark
I shivered, recoiling from the wandering thought plaguing my mind.
Something lives in the dark.
Something lives in the dark.
What could it be? What could drive people to insanity?
Demons, goblins, sprites, sirens, ghouls, vampires…the list went on, though I didn’t believe in the existence of any of them. They were too…obvious. Too much something that was whispered about in folktales and stories about the fire to be the actual thing that lurked in shadows. It had to be something else. Something different entirely.
Placing my glass down, I went to leave the kitchen. But before I could flick off the light, Lola scratched at the back door. Soft, incessant, and I wondered why Mom hadn’t let her back in before going to bed. It was unlike her, certainly. Maybe she was tired?
I moved over and grabbed the handle. The scratching was more urgent now, as though the pup desperately wanted inside. “Lola calm down.”
I turned the lock, but paused when another sound came from the corner under the table.
Lola lay there, asleep, her little paws tapping at the floor, while the scratching still came from the other side of the back door.
