Christmas Carol
Venturing into a nearby tavern, Ed tucked himself into a corner and ordered a stew while he read over his banker’s book. When that failed to hold his interest, he reached for the nearest newspaper, staring momentarily at the cover and the handsome man adorning it.
“What have you got to be so happy about?” he whispered to the grinning face, flipping the page over in frustration, dipping inside to read more about the latest financial health of the city. Knowing that couldn’t hold his interest either, he tossed it aside, sipped at his food, and watched the pub around him with dark, soft brown eyes.
A small group of musicians were playing carols on violins, a soothing sound that filled the pub with warm cheer. Ed looked at them from under the brim of his top-hat, gaze narrowing as he watched the skilled musicians breaking his long-sought solitude after the day. With an impatient sigh, he finished the dregs of his stew and left his table, opened the door, and filled the pub with cold air as he disappeared into the night.
